HUNDREDS of schoolchildren are being taught valuable life lessons during Child Safety Week.
Throughout this week, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's road safety team is presenting Guisborough pupils with roadside pedestrian awareness training.
Spike The Hedgehog, the council's road safety mascot, will be joining 340 children from Highcliffe Primary School, in Guisborough, in one-hour sessions to raise awareness of roadside safety.
The event involves learning about junctions, safe places to cross and how to cross between cars safely.
The council's cabinet member for strategic planning, development and infrastructure, Councillor Eric Empson, said: "It is vital that children are aware of how to keep safe next to roads.
"One mistake can cost you your life and we are hoping that the road safety skills we are teaching all this week will be shared with their peers, brothers, sisters, parents and carers."
The council is supporting Child Safety Week in conjunction with national charity the Child Accident Prevention Trust.
