AN amateur football club will head south to relive one of their greatest moments as they play a special exhibition match next month.
Bishop Auckland FC will travel to Hendon FC's Claremont Street ground on Saturday, July 16 - 50 years after the two teams met at a packed Wembley stadium in the FA Amateur Cup final.
The Bishops, who were relegated from the UniBond Premier League last season, beat their southern opponents 2-0 in front of 100,000 fans on April 16, 1955, with legendary striker Derek Lewin scoring both goals.
It was one of ten occasions when the club won the trophy, but perhaps the most memorable and the cup will be at the game after the Football Association agreed to loan it out for the fixture.
Club director John Cowey said: "This will be the first time for most Bishops supporters to see the silverware that made Bishop Auckland its home in the mid-1950s. With so much attention focusing on the present, with relegation to the UniBond League first division, and the future, with the new stadium project, the club is taking some time out to reflect on the past."
The team will be accompanied by Bishop Auckland-based Filmar Photography to give fans the chance to have their picture taken with the cup.
Seats are available on the Bishop Auckland FC team coach, which will be leaving on the Saturday morning and return next day.
To book a seat on the coach, costing £30, contact David Illingworth on (07736) 050739 or David Strong on (07768) 763871. Accommodation can also be arranged through the club at a cost of £45 per room.
