A DURHAM family's mercy mission to Albania will help get deprived orphans on the road to recovery.
Vans being used to transport supplies to the youngsters are to be given to the orphans to help them set up a business.
The idea began when George Gibbins, who owns and runs the Olympia garage in Langley Moor, was asked about van hire by his son, Stephen, who is planning the trip to Albania.
Stephen, who is working in Scotland, was told he had no need to hire a vehicle as George had a van he would repair.
The idea snowballed when George persuaded suppliers to provide the parts for the van and everything from a clutch to wheels were donated, while the garage boss and his staff completed the mechanical work.
George then set up a series of raffles, with the winning prizes including free servicing and MOTs at his garage.
But with donated supplies coming in thick and fast, George decided that he should try to get a second van and has been offered one by Durham Constabulary at a reduced price.
He is now trying to raise another £2,000 to pay for it.
When Stephen and another driver arrive with their supplies, they will donate the vans to the orphanage.
A water boiler and a washing machine are also on the family's shopping list, and anyone who can help is asked to contact George on 0191-378 1276.
