A sell-out crowd witnessed a bright start by Australia in the one-day international at the Riverside, Durham, as they clocked up 32 for no wicket after just five overs.
England's bowlers managed to calm the Australian attack of Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden, holding them to 44-0 by the end of the ninth over.
It wasn't until the tenth over that Tremlett managed to break the partnership as Gilchrist edged to a leaping Geraint Jones who managed to gather up the ball on the second attempt, sending Gilchrist back to the pavillion for just 18.
Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden notched up a further 51 runs before both their wickets were taken in consecutive overs, Ponting held at third man by Ashley Giles off the bowling of Harmison while Hayden was caught by Geraint Jones.
