WORK has started this week on a £1.2m rehabilitation centre for older people in Darlington.
AMEC Construction, with ACM Health Solutions, is carrying out the work on land in front of a current unit in Hundens Lane.
Darlington Primary Care Trust says it will provide a major boost to services for older people in the town and help meet the challenges of an ageing population.
Trust chairwoman Sandra Pollard said: "This is the third phase of our estates strategy, following on from Dr Piper House and Park Place Health Centre, and I am thrilled it is taking place.
"It will certainly enhance services for older people in Darlington and I am looking forward to seeing it finished and in operation."
Construction is expected to take seven months, with the centre opening next February.
