A MAN was stabbed to death outside his parents' home as they celebrated their joint birthdays.
David Edward Aylward, 33, was attacked and collapsed outside the house in Farndale Road, Newcastle, on Wednesday.
It happened as a party was being thrown for his parents, aged 60 and 53.
A murder incident room has been set up at Etal Lane Police Station, and the investigation is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Jim Napier.
He said: "During the course of the evening, there had been a number of scuffles and minor fights, one of which, at 9.55pm, resulted in Mr Aylward being stabbed.
"Paramedics attended and he was taken to Newcastle General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival."
Five local men are in custody helping police with inquiries.
