PARENTS of children at a Chester-le-Street school have raised £10,000 to create a library for their youngsters.
Pupils at St Cuthbert's Infant School, in Ropery Lane, will have more than 1,000 books to choose from.
The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) raised the cash by holding, fairs, fetes coffee mornings, discos and fund-raisers.
PTA chairwoman Jane Ord said the money was used to buy a set of reading books for the children.
She said: "They can take them home and read them with their parents.
"The other books were old and had pages missing, so we wanted to bring them up to date.
"We only started raising money in October, so we are thrilled to have reached our target so soon.
"The reason is the parents and children have been incredibly supportive."
Headteacher Sean Brown said: "I am absolutely delighted as this is something we desperately need but could not afford without the help of the parents.
"They are fantastic at coming up with ideas and seeing them through."
The PTA is now aiming to raise £20,000 to create a computer network at the school.
Its next event is a family fun day on July 2, from noon to 4pm at the school. There will be 35 to 40 stalls. Entry is 50p for adults but kids go free.
