DURHAM are unable to follow the general trend of profiting from spin bowling in the Twenty20 Cup because of Graeme Bridge's back trouble, writes TIM WELLOCK.
The left-armer has been told to take two weeks' rest after a scan revealed a disc problem, so the only change for tomorrow's match at Leicester sees Graeme Onions added to the squad.
Apart from the match against Durham University, when he took four for 54 in the second innings, Bridge's only first-team appearances this season have been against Somerset at Stockton, when he bowled three overs in the match, and last Sunday's defeat at Arundel.
"We had planned to use him in the Twenty20 but obviously we can't," said coach Martyn Moxon. "We are leaving out Ashley Noffke and Mark Davies as a precaution.
"Having eight games in the competition this season gives us a bit more room for manoeuvre but we can't afford to lose many more matches."
After the six-wicket defeat in Wednesday night's opener at Derby, Durham need to bounce back against the holders by repeating last year's win at Grace Road.
Leicestershire are among the counties favouring spin, picking up five wickets in Wednesday's win against Nottinghamshire through Jeremy Snape's off-spin plus the left-arm of Claude Henderson and Indian all-rounder Dinesh Mongia.
Among the other favoured sides Lancashire also used three spinners in beating Yorkshire, as did Surrey against Kent, while Mushtaq Ahmed took five for 11 for Sussex against Essex.
Only Essex's 109 all out was lower than Durham's 130 for seven at Derby, while four teams have already topped 200 this season.
