TOMMY Miller has insisted that fellow Sunderland new-boy Kelvin Davis is the perfect man to fill the boots of recently departed goalkeeper Thomas Myhre.
Myhre, who made 35 appearances as the Black Cats romped to the Championship title last season, has confirmed he will not be signing a new contract at the Stadium of Light.
His exit was hastened by the arrival of Davis, who made a £1.25m switch from Ipswich earlier this month.
Davis and Miller were team-mates at Portman Road last term, and will be teaming up again on Wearside following the latter's move north last week.
And, after watching the goalkeeper at close quarters last term, Sunderland's most recent recruit is confident Mick McCarthy has made another astute buy.
"Kelvin is a massive signing for Sunderland," claimed Miller. "He was the best goalkeeper in the Championship by far last season. That was proved when he was voted into the PFA team of the season by his fellow pros.
"He's a superb lad and a great goalkeeper, as I'm sure everybody will find out next season.
"I'm looking forward to linking up with him again and I'm sure he'll be a great addition to this squad."
McCarthy remains hopeful of making two or three more signings before the start of the new season, with Portsmouth striker Ricardo Fuller and West Brom midfielder Jason Koumas the latest players to have come under his microscope.
Fuller was something of a flop after moving to the south coast from Preston last season, while West Brom are willing to let Koumas move on a season-long loan deal after failing to find a buyer for the transfer-listed star.
* Aston Villa fans are urging chairman Doug Ellis to relinquish control of the club amid reports that a consortium are preparing to make a £45m takeover.
