VILLAGERS fighting to retain their secondary school last week staged another major public display of opposition against plans to relocate it.
Just a day after about 200 people held a march to protest about the planned closure of Eastbourne and Hurworth schools, a public meeting about the scheme attracted a huge turn-out.
Darlington Borough Council has revealed plans to close both schools and bring them together in a school for 1,200 pupils, calledHurworth School, on land near Alderman Tommy Crooks Park, at the top of Yarm Road.
But Hurworth residents again voiced their strong disapproval at the meeting, in Grange Community Centre.
More than 250 people packed the venue to see a parent-led action committee formed to wage a battle on behalf of Hurworth and other affected surrounding villages.
Borough council bosses are lobbying hard for Government funding earmarked for a new secondary school in Darlington to be released as soon as possible.
