PARENTS of children at a Chester-le-Street school have raised £10,000 for a new library for their youngsters.
Pupils at St Cuthbert's Infant School in Ropery Lane now have more than 1,000 new books to choose from.
The PTA raised the cash by holding, fairs, fetes, coffee mornings, discos and other events.
PTA chairman Jane Ord said the money was used to buy a set of reading books for the children.
She said: "They can take them home and read them with their parents. The other books were old and had pages missing so we wanted to bring them up to date."
Headteacher Sean Brown praised the fantastic parents: "I am absolutely delighted as this is something we desperately need but could not afford without the help of the parents."
The PTA is now aiming to raise £20,000 to create a computer network at the school. Its next event is a family fun day this Saturday from noon until 4pm at the school. There will be about 40 stalls. Entry is 50p adults, children free.
