A STORM chamber designed to screen thousands of gallons of rainwater before it is discharged should be finished by September.
The £1.5m chamber, next to The Hydro swimming pool in Harrogate, should improve the quality of the water in Oak Beck and the River Nidd.
Yorkshire Water gave Harrogate Borough councillors the chance to have a look round the chamber this week before it is covered up and the playing field above replanted.
Smaller combined sewer overflows have also been installed along Parliament Street and Skipton Road, in Harrogate, as well as in nearby Killinghall.
Yorkshire Water said the construction of the chamber meant the company has avoided digging up the roads in 15 locations around the town.
Project manager Steve Cooper said: "All people will be able to see once we have finished is a small building that will house monitoring equipment.
"People rarely appreciate what lies under their feet, so we thought members of the council may want to learn more about how the system works."
