MORE than 20,000 people gathered at an international festival of kites, music and dance at the weekend.
The free event, at the Northern Area Playing Fields, in Washington, Wearside, attracted a record-breaking 30 kite-fliers from all over the world, including from Japan, China, the US, Australia, Germany, Malaysia and Ghana.
The event included altitude competitions, dragon kite displays, kite buggying and synchronised flying and power kiting.
The Sunderland International Festival of Kites, Music and Dance, hosted by Sunderland City Council, also celebrated its 20th birthday.
A city council spokesman said: "The weekend has been a spectacular success. We were blessed with perfect weather. As well as being able to enjoy the most spectacular kites of all shapes and sizes, people were entertained with dancing and music."
