A MOTHER who has been profoundly deaf since she was a youngster has won the national Child Minder of the Year award.
Ann Robson, of Carrville, Durham City, was nominated for the accolade by the mother of one of the children she cares for.
At the Childcare Stars 2005 awards at the Globe Theatre, London. it was revealed that she had been chosen in the Best Childcarers in England category.
The awards, organised by national charity 4Children and sponsored by the Government's SureStart Unit, were presented by its vice-president, Cherie Booth, Minister for Children Beverley Hughes and musician Chesney Hawkes.
Anne Longfield, chief executive of 4Children, said: "It's a fantastic achievement for Ann to win this award as competition is so fierce and it's great to see such a dedicated and professional carer receiving the recognition she deserves.''
Mrs Robson, whose own children are now grown up, has never allowed her hearing impairment to prevent her carrying out her job.
She said she had found ways of communicating with her young charges.
Mrs Robson said: "I'm so happy and proud to have won. I was amazed to have been shortlisted and to actually win is a great feeling.
"The award wouldn't have been possible without the support of colleagues and, of course, the children."
