A NORTH-EAST man has taken over as the chief executive of children's charity Barnardo's.
Middlesbrough-born Martin Narey, the chief executive of the Offender Management Service and a permanent Home Office secretary, will take over at the end of the year. The 49-year-old established the decency agenda in prisons, which has led to significant improvements in prison conditions and cut prisoner abuse.
Mr Narey replaces Roger Singleton, who is retiring.
He said: "I am honoured to have the opportunity to take over from one of the most outstanding chief executives in the volunteer sector and to get the chance to focus my attention on working with children and young people.
"I have the unique opportunity to contribute to the vital work of Barnardo's in improving the life chances of all young people."
Jonathan Ewen, director of Barnardo's North-East, said: "He will bring an inspirational leadership style with respect for staff and the young people with whom he works."
