THE setting was perfect, the artistes incomparable.
It was only the weather that did not come up to par when east Durham staged its first Proms in the Park.
After days of pleasant sunshine, the heavens opened over the grounds of Shotton Hall, in Peterlee, the setting for the open air concert of light opera.
But with true Dunkirk spirit, English National Opera stars Graeme Danby and Valerie Reid gave superb performances of songs from Gilbert and Sullivan.
The unrelenting rain clearly had an impact on the size of the audience at the free event, which also included a picnic for everyone.
But for those who did brave the elements, it was a spellbinding evening in a glorious, if somewhat damp, setting.
Graeme, who hails from the North-East, and Valerie were joined on stage by children from Eden School in Peterlee, Shotton Primary School, Acre Rigg School, Shotton Hall Junior School, South Hetton School and Shotton Hall Secondary School.
The two opera stars had rehearsed for days with the youngsters in preparation for last night's performance, which featured highlights from the Gondoliers, Mikado, Pirates of Penzance and Iolanthe.
It was the first time an outdoor event of its kind had been held in east Durham and, though the weather was disappointing, the performances weren't.
Taking advantage of all the staging for the Proms in the Park, a second event will be held tonight, featuring young musicians from all over east Durham.
Following in the footsteps of Live8, the event will be in aid of Africa.
Doors will open at 5.30pm, with performances beginning at 6pm.
