A COLOURFUL sculpture going on show surrounded by former Bishops of Durham next month should appeal to art lovers with a sweet tooth.

North-East artist Sarah- Jane Szikora took her trademark gingerbread man to Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland, where her work is on display at a food festival next month.

She is staging her exhibition in the castle’s Throne Room, where the walls are lined with centuries-old portraits of previous Bishops.

Ms Szikora visited yesterday to plan her display and meet the team organising the festival, which takes place on Saturday, April 17.

Ms Szikora, who was born in the town’s General Hospital and grew up in Darlington and Richmond, but now lives in North Shields, North Tyneside, said: “The castle is a fantastic setting.”

She is one of a number of artists exhibiting at the festival, which last year attracted 28,000 visitors.
