PRESSURE was increasing on England football captain John Terry yesterday as more allegations about his private life emerged.
Terry, who scored the winning goal for Chelsea against Burnley on Saturday, remained stony-faced amid claims he had an affair with the ex-partner of former team-mate Wayne Bridge.
He declined to comment on the allegations that he had cheated on his wife, Toni, but the pressure on him was exacerbated yesterday by extensive newspaper coverage about his alleged relationship with Vanessa Perroncel.
The allegations came to light after a gagging order was lifted at the High Court, in London, on Friday.
Bridge, 29, who has separated from Ms Perroncel and now plays for Manchester City, said in a statement on Saturday that he did not intend to comment on the reports for the sake of the couple’s son.
Ms Perroncel is considering her next move after signing up publicist Max Clifford. He said he had spoken to her yesterday morning and she was “upset and desperate to know where all this stuff is coming from”.
Terry had been expected to lead England to this summer’s World Cup in South Africa, but there has been no word from the Football Association (FA) or England manager Fabio Capello about whether he will continue as the national team’s captain.
The FA is happy for Capello to have the final say on Terry’s suitability.
He is expected to make a decision before England’s next match – a friendly against Egypt on March 3.
On Saturday, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed Terry would remain captain of the club. “There is no discussion about this (the captaincy),” he said.
Yesterday, Manchester City’s Roberto Mancini revealed that some of the players had worn shirts bearing the words “Team Bridge” in support of team-mate Bridge as they took on Portsmouth in the Premier League.
The City stars felt it was important to show their backing for the England full-back, who is out with a knee injury.
