RETIRED firefighters from the North-East are using a social network to stay in touch.
Members of the Durham Old Boys Network, set up for people who once worked for the former , come from all over the world.
Former watch manager Ian Ferguson, from Peterlee, east Durham, set up the group to maintain contact with former colleagues.
He posts pictures and videos sent in my members and gives out information on issues such as retirement and benefits.
Some of the group meet every few weeks because they like to maintain the spirit of camaraderie they enjoyed while working.
Mr Ferguson, who retired in June 2008, after nearly 35 years’ service, said that people were also joining from Cleveland and Tyne and Wear Fire services.
He said: “Working in the fire service was like being part of a family and we all miss it when we leave.
“Talking to other retired firefighters, I realised there was nothing at all in place to keep retired people informed about developments in the fire service, brigade events, forthcoming retirements and sadly the deaths of former colleagues.
“I put the word out among a small number of retired chaps I knew and, from there, is has just snowballed by word of mouth to the extent that I now have more than 100 names on my list and it is growing every week.”
