TWO teenage girls could be rewarded for their loyalty if they are named this month’s Going the Extra Mile award winners.
A proud grandmother has praised her granddaughter and friend for their commitment to their Saturday job.
Beth Parker and Becca Doughty, both 16, are in the running to receive the accolade given to outstanding employees in the region.
The Northern Echo has joined forces with the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) to recognise inspirational commitment.
Each winner gets £100, with the overall top worker scooping an extra £300.
Ann Denniss put forward her grandaughter, Beth, and friend Becca, who are students at Northallerton College and work on Saturday as waitresses at Sam Turner’s café in the North Yorkshire town.
Mrs Denniss said they left home at 6am one day to walk the two miles to work in freezing fog. “How many teenagers are as loyal and dedicated as that for a Saturday job,” she asked.
“I don’t expect them to be nominated for an award but it would be nice for a little recognition of their loyalty and that there are some great kids out there.”
Sarah Hodgson, from Delves Lane, near Consett, was the January winner after she walked 15 miles through the snow for four hours to work in Durham.
Nominations for the award can be sent to Nigel Burton, The Northern Echo, Priestgate, Darlington, DL1 1NF. Entries must be no more than 50 words and include the sender’s name, address and phone number.
