A NEW student rowing regatta held in the region at the weekend has been hailed a success.
Rowers from universities in the North-East, Durham University colleges and institutions in Scotland took part in the inaugural Durham University Winter Challenge Cup on the River Tyne.
The competition was held on Saturday and yesterday, and there were 16 events each day for rowers ranging from novices to internationals.
Edinburgh University was the overall winner.
Laura Baker, vice-captain of Durham University Boat Club, said: “It has gone really well, there weren’t any hiccups.
“We had crews from all over the North-East, Scotland and Durham colleges. We had everybody, from freshers to GB team members. We had a big variety of performers and there was a really high standard of performance. Everybody did well.
“We are looking to make this an annual event and hopefully more and more people will come along.’’
