NEW Renault team principal Eric Boullier has revealed Nick Heidfeld could again be reunited with Robert Kubica.
Renault are the only established Formula One team yet to fill both race seats, even though they are due to launch in Valencia at the end of this month.
Kubica signed for Renault in early October, however, the uncertain future of the team that followed forced any plans to recruit a team-mate on hold.
Renault are now predominantly owned by Luxembourg- based private investment firm Genii Capital, whilst Boullier only took charge a fortnight ago.
It means Kubica may be on his own for the first test in Valencia from February 1-3 as Boullier ponders his partner.
Heidfeld, though, is in the running after he and Kubica spent the previous three and a half years together at BMW Sauber.
‘‘It would be a lie to say ‘no’,’’ said Boullier when asked whether Heidfeld was a possibility. ‘‘Definitely it’s a different question because he has spent so many years with Robert.
‘‘The question mark is if we want to put them together again or not. But he’s on the list.”
Boullier confirmed he is looking at two experienced drivers, of which Heidfeld is one, and two rookies.
The Frenchman has to weigh up the expertise and knowledge a driver like Heidfeld brings, with the financial backing a rookie may have behind him, such as Russia’s Vitaly Petrov.
‘‘We’d love to take the decision before the test. If not, Robert will start the development alone,’’ he admitted.
