I RATHER like tomorrow's Memories. It is about probably the most famous person to come out of the village of Hurworth on the southern edge of Darlington: William Emerson, an 18th Century mathematician of whom most Hurworthians have never heard.

The article, though, didn't have room for this picture which is the only one I can find of Emerson's original house on the north side of The Green. It was demolished in 1964, and I have spoken to someone who walked through it all those years ago, and he recalls that it really was in need of demolition.

It seems as if Emerson built it himself, diving into the river to drag out stones as and when he required them.

It was probably this roof on which John Hunter was mending the tiles when the Cambridge University professors came calling.

I'm fascinated by the Emerson story, and will be returning to it soon.
