HERE are a couple more Bedalian memories from my anonymous 89-year-old caller.

"I learned to swim in Bedale Beck, many, many, many years ago," she says, "with an old car tyre round me. There were lots of bricks and glass on the bottom, but I wore plimsolls.

"I always understood as a girl that below the harbour there was a whirlpool."

Does anyone else know about the whirlpool of landlocked Bedale?

============================ A CALLER from Thirsk points out that in the paper I got my initials mixed up in the Bedale article. The picture, of the unusual date on three buildings on Wycar green, clearly says H18B94P, and not H18M94P as I said in the text.

In my defence, the initials HBP and HMP both would tally as being constructed by the splendiferously named Sir Henry Monson de la Poer Beresford-Peirse.
