A PEDESTRIAN walking through a village late at night in thick fog died in a car accident.

Visibility is believed to have been as little as ten metres when the accident happened, shortly before midnight on Saturday.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident in Church Row, Hurworth, near Darlington, or those in the vicinity just before to come forward.

The victim was David Paul Light, 58.

The incident took place near the Emerson Arms pub, just round the corner from Mr Light’s home in Strait Lane.

A blue Renault Clio car was travelling east along Church Row in the direction of Neasham Road when the accident happened.

Mr Light, who was taken to hospital, suffered head injuries.

Staff at the Emerson Arms said they were aware there had been an accident, but did not know anything more about it.

■ A MAN has been arrested following a three-car accident.

Four people were cut free from their vehicles and taken to hospital after the incident.

Some of their injuries are believed to be serious.

The accident happened shortly before noon on Saturday in Staindrop Road, on the outskirts of Darlington.

Dozens of emergency service personnel attended the scene and the road was closed for the duration of the incident.

It is thought an Alfa Romeo sports car heading out of Darlington was involved in the accident with a Renault Clio travelling in the opposite direction.

The Clio was forced into the path of a Nissan Qashqai following behind.

The male driver and male front-seat passenger in the Alfa Romeo were cut free from the vehicle and taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

Police arrested the driver and an officer accompanied him to hospital.

The female driver and male passenger of the Clio were also cut free by the fire brigade and taken to hospital.

Their injuries are thought to be serious.

A man and woman travelling in the Qashqai received only minor injuries.

A nearby resident said: “I was just sat in the house when I heard this massive crash and I came straight outside. It looked really awful.”
