A MAN has been arrested following a three car crash in Darlington.
Four people had to be cut free from their vehicles and were taken to hospital following the incident.
Some of their injuries are believed to be serious.
The accident occurred shortly before midday today on Staindrop Road on the outskirts of the town.
Dozens of emergency service personnel attended the scene.
It is thought that an Alfa Romeo sports car which was heading out of Darlington was in collision with a Renault Clio travelling in the opposite direction.
The Clio was then forced into the path of a Nissan Qashqai following behind.
The male driver and male front seat passenger of the Alfa Romeo had to be cut free from the vehicle and were taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The extent of their injuries is not yet known.
Police have arrested the driver and an officer accompanied him to hospital.
The female driver and male passenger of the Clio also had to be cut free by the fire brigade and were transported to hospital.
Their injuries are thought to be significant.
The male and female travelling in the Qashqai received only minor injuries.
