TWO members of 3rd Battalion The Rifles died in Afghanistan last night, the Ministry of Defence has announced.
The soldiers were killed by an improvised explosive device as they patrolled near Sangin, in Helmand Province.
Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "It is with deep sadness I must inform you that two British soldiers from 3rd Battalion, The Rifles were killed by an explosion near Sangin in Helmand Province yesterday evening.
"They were on a foot patrol protecting the local population from insurgents when the attack happened.
"Their boldness in the face of danger, and the sacrifice they have made, will be remembered."
The soldiers' families have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
