MONEY donated to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation by Newcastle United will be used to benefit teenage cancer patients from across the region.
About £30,000 raised by auctioning player’s shirts from the recent Ipswich Newcastle match will go towards the new teenage cancer unit in the Great North Children’s Hospital, at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), in Newcastle.
The unit is being constructed by the Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust in partnership with the Teenage Cancer Trust in the “penthouse” of the children’s hospital.
It will provide teenage cancer patients with a home away from home when they need treatment and bridge the gap between existing services, which are designed for younger children or adults.
Pauline Buglass, head of fundraising for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, said: “Sir Bobby was always committed to contributing to other cancer related projects when appropriate and his family felt this was one of those occasions.
“We’re very grateful to Newcastle United and to all the people who helped make this donation possible by bidding for the match-worn shirts.”
