THE first winner in a competition to find the region’s employee of the year has been rewarded for her outstanding commitment.
Sarah Hodgson was given £100 after she walked four hours through the snow to reach work.
The Northern Echo has joined forces with the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) to recognise inspirational workers.
Each Going the Extra Mile winner will receive £100, with £300 extra for the annual winner.
Miss Hodgson, a supervisor at Oldfields Restaurant, in Durham City, said she was delighted to win.
When her car became snowed-in and with public transport at a standstill, the 28-year-old got up at 5am to walk 13.6 miles from Delves Lane, near Consett, to Durham City.
James Ramsbotham, the chief executive of the NECC, presented Miss Hodgson with the money yesterday. He said: “Any boss would be over the moon to have that level of dedication from their workforce.”
Peter Barron, the editor of The Northern Echo, said: “Just imagine how the economy would benefit if every employer could rely on the likes of the intrepid Sarah Hodgson.”
Nominations for the award can be sent to Nigel Burton, The Northern Echo, Priestgate, Darlington, DL1 1NF.
Entries must be no more than 50 words and include the sender’s name, address and daytime phone number.
