A PEDESTRIAN killed in an accident involving a lorry as she walked along the A1 has been named by police.

Sarah Ann James, 40, from Colburn, North Yorkshire, died at the scene, on the southbound A1 near Catterick at 2.30am on Wednesday.

Bad weather was not thought to have been a factor, but police declined to speculate about why Ms James was on the A1.

A teenager who died on the same stretch of road on the same day has also been named locally as Jake Gray, 16.

Jake and his mother, also named locally as Gillian, 46, were involved in an accident with a lorry after they got out of their car following a collision with the central reservation on the northbound A1, just past junction 57, near Barton, North Yorkshire, shortly before 10pm.

Mrs Gray, who has been told of her son’s death, is in a stable condition in hospital with serious injuries.

Tributes to Jake, from North Shields, North Tyneside, have been paid by friends and neighbours.

A friend of the family said: “I cannot imagine what she is going through.”

It is thought Mrs Gray had been taking a friend’s son to university in Leeds and were on their way home when the accident happened.
