DESPITE the perception that swine flu is a decreasing threat, there were still more than 1,800 cases across the region over the past three weeks.
The latest figures released by the NHS show there were 1,836 new cases of swine flu in the North-East between Thursday, December 17, and Wednesday, January 6.
Fourteen people were hospitalised because of swine flu symptoms during the same period.
No figures were available for swine flu in North Yorkshire.
Martin Wilson, the North- East director of NHS flu resilience said: “Although we are not seeing any increase in flu cases across the region at the moment, viruses can survive longer in freezing conditions, and so it is vitally important that people remember the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ message and help reduce the risk of catching and spreading germs. People should always cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, throw away the tissue immediately and wash their hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
“It is equally important that people look after themselves properly if they become unwell during this prolonged cold spell.
“Those who get unwell and develop flu-like symptoms should stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and use over-the-counter flu remedies or paracetamol to relieve symptoms.”
