ONE of the region’s oldest rugby clubs has said it still has a future despite a winding-up order being issued by the Inland Revenue.
Management at Darlington RFC have said they are hopeful all outstanding debts will be paid by the Wednesday deadline and the club can look forward to exciting new developments during the coming months.
An advertisement has appeared in the London Gazette stating that HM Revenue and Customs has submitted a petition to compulsorily wind-up the club, which is based at Blackwell Meadows, in Darlington.
However, Paul Barkes, the club’s chairman, has said the money owned to HMRC, believed to be about £7,000, is likely to be paid back before the scheduled court date on Wednesday He said the new management structure at the club is working hard to ensure it will be financially secure.
The money is an historic debt which has steadily been reduced from about £40,000.
Mr Barkes said: “Like a lot of sports clubs we’ve had a difficult few years. We’re getting through them, and this year will be a key year for us.
“We are confident that we still have a future, we are just in the process of working on some very exciting opportunities.”
Mr Barkes said he and the new committee have made a number of radical changes, such as no longer paying players, to make the club more financially viable.
The committee is also working with Darlington Borough Council with a view to increasing the number of sports which can be played at Blackwell Meadows.
Mr Barkes added he was keen for the club, which dates back to 1863, to become more involved in the community.
He said: “We really want to work with local schools and local organisations and for people to use our facilities.
“We want it to become more of a community club.
“On the back of that, we are looking for opportunities for other sports. It has been hard, but now we are looking to get on and move forward.”
Any businesses, organisations or people who would like to get involved with the club are asked to call Mr Barkes on 07909-910255.
