PASSENGERS on two buses which collided in a North-East town yesterday are being asked to contact police.

The vehicles crashed in North Road, Darlington, near the Odeon Cinema, at about 12.40pm.

No one is thought to have been seriously injured, although a few people were taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

The buses were the number seven, which travels between Durham and Darlington, and the number six, which covers a town centre route.

Police diversions were in place during the afternoon while investigations took place and the wreckage removed.

PC Calvin Skinner, of the road policing unit, last night called for any passengers on the buses to get in touch, if they had not already spoken to officers.

He added: “We were unable to speak to some of the passengers to get their accounts of what happened before they went on their way, either on foot or on another bus, and we would ask them to get in touch.”

PC Skinner can be contacted via the non-emergency number 0345-60-60-365.

One passenger, who did not wish to be named, said: “I was worried about my baby because there was smoke, and at first we weren’t allowed off.

We had to beg and plead.”

A spokesman for bus firm Arriva, which runs both of the vehicles involved, said: “We are investigating the matter to see how it occurred and are assisting the emergency services in dealing with the situation.”
