AN investigation into the cause of a fire that destroyed a farmhouse and adjoining holiday cottages has been put on hold.

Firefighters could not save Bowlees Farm near Wolsingham, County Durham, from the blaze last Friday night.

Some property from Tony and Viviene Smith's property, including two pet rabbits belonging to their son, was saved.

The couple were on holiday at the time of the fire.

A multi-agency investigation into the incident is yet to start as the site has been too dangerous for investigators visit.

A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said the site is inaccessible as the building is in a state of collapse and due to the severe weather conditions.

It could be several weeks before a cause of fire has been established.
