SUB-ZERO temperatures did not stop revellers venturing out to welcome in the new year.
Police across the region reported a busier-than-average night, but said there had been no major incidents.
Thousands flocked to Newcastle to see in 2010. Girls braved the snow and ice in high heels and mini-dresses and, on occasion, the festive goodwill descended into violence.
Men still took off their shirts to fight despite the freezing temperatures, with one man left blood-soaked after a fight in the Bigg Market.
Police attended 1,295 incidents from the Newcastle area and took about 2,000 calls overnight. A spokesman said: “It was busy compared to a normal night, but I would say it was average for a New Year’s Eve.”
