AN overnight flurry of more snow failed to stop a plucky band of swimmers from enjoying their annual New Year’s Day dip in icy sea water.
About ten hardy people welcomed 2010 by wading into the North Sea to raise money for Saltburn Animal Rescue Association (Sara).
Association chairwoman Ann Prosser said she was amazed that, despite the bad weather, a throng of more than 50 supporters turned up to cheer on the brave “dippers”.
While one person braced the water yesterday morning dressed as a Native American, others donned Tshirts and leggings for the plunge off Saltburn beach.
“Considering the weather conditions, it was so heartening to see so many people show up,” Miss Prosser said.
A beach collection raised £80 for the association, which will go towards the Foxrush Farm Sanctuary and Rehoming Centre in Kirkleatham Lane, Redcar.
Its latest additions include two abandoned seven-weekold puppies found in a field two days before Christmas, a four-day-old puppy, who needs feeding hourly, and a heavily pregnant stray.
“The commitment to animals in this area is amazing,”
she added.
“The goodwill far outweighs the negative side of people. As an animal sanctuary, we would not manage without the generosity of the public and we are so grateful for that.”
Meanwhile, dozens of people – young and old – braved freezing conditions to join a charity dip in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside.
The annual event was staged by the Panama Swimming Club, based on the beach promenade, with some participants donning fancy dress. Club volunteers provided tea, coffee, and a hot shower for all those who took part.
