We have had a number of calls today, criticising us for using the title "Serjeant" in our reports about the death of North Yorkshire soldier Phillip Scott.
I understand why readers are under the impression that we have spelled "Sergeant" incorrectly.
One reader wrote to me tonight, saying: "Shame on you, Northern Echo."
On this occasion, those complaints are unjustified. "Serjeant" is the traditional spelling used by the 3rd Battalion The Rifles.
Instead of being disrespectful and careless, as has been suggested, we actually took the care to call the Ministry of Defence and ask for clarification.
We were assured that "Serjeant" is the title that should be used.
