Ashleigh Hall's funeral will bring Darlington town centre to a standstill later today.

Ashleigh, 17, died after meeting a man via the internet and my thoughts are with her family.

In today's paper, we have launched the "Safety Net" campaign in support of efforts by Darlington Borough Council to improve the way internet dangers are highlighted through education.

A report to councillors yesterday concluded that there were gaps and inconsistencies in the way internet warnings are taught in schools and colleges.

"Safety Net" aims for a more focused approach which will hopefully be more effective without adding to the burden on schools.

The aim is to ensure that all children receive advice about internet safety as a formal requirement of the national curriculum.

Since Ashleigh died, I have had a number of conversations and correspondence with local head teachers and prominent members of the council, notably Councillor Jenny Chapman, the cabinet member for children and young people, about how something constructive might come out of this terrible tragedy.

I hope this campaign proves to be worthwhile.
