IF MIKE Ashley continues to feel this urge to interfere with the name of St James’ Park and he does not want to totally alienate himself, not only from the fans but also the people of Newcastle as a whole, he might wish to consider this option.

How about The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Stadium@St James Park? On top of this he could donate one or two per cent from home game ticket sales to the foundation. I am sure the fans would go with this idea.

MIKE Ashley needs congratulating for selling off all of the highly-paid mediocre players that Newcastle United had on its books. It made £40m in the process, allowing a £20m player investment in the new year for the manager. It also greatly helps cash flow and profitability.

A succession of bad managerial decisions and player purchases without motivation contributed tremendously to the present situation at Newcastle.

Titus Bramble (Wigan), Bowyer (Birmingham), Bellamy (Manchester City), Michael Owen (Manchester United) to name just a few presently all playing brilliant football. Owen made just 79 appearances for Newcastle because of two serious injuries and many other illnesses, after Newcastle paid £17m, plus £20m in wages for him. Now his career has taken off again. All of these players reported to be finding inspiration and motivation by their new club managers and staff.

Chris Hughton, and not Alan Shearer, was handed a contract by the chairman because of his brilliant start in the Championship. It is noticeable, however, the contract period is limited and the £20m set aside for players won’t be any use until January 2010 when Ashley will have a better picture of the chances for promotion.
