On Saturday night, the fast flowing west bound A66 was the site of the near fatal collision, as a Mazda MX5 hit a tree next to the carriageway.
The car was travelling from the direction of Middlesbrough and smashed into the tree, at the junction of Darlington Road, Long Newton, Stockton- on-Tees.
A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “At 23.30 hours on the night of Saturday 31st October a Mazda MX5 left the road, colliding with a tree adjacent to the carriageway.
No other vehicles are believed to be involved.”
The driver was taken to hospital with severe injuries. These are not life threatening. The A66 has a record of notorious fatalities.
The Government aims to cut road deaths by 2,000, for 2010.
