A CENTRE for people with learning difficulties has been officially opened by a medal-winning Paralympic athlete.
The opening ceremony for Grindon Mews, a £2.6m community social care facility in Sunderland, was performed by wheelchair racer and Paralympic bronze medallist Nicola Jarvis and city mayor Dennis Richardson.
The facility will offer specialist social care and support to adults aged 18 to 65 who have profound and multiple learning disabilities.
A spokesman for Sunderland City Council said: “It is designed to maximise independence, promote individual choice and help aid social inclusion.
“It includes specialist day opportunities for up to 28 adults per day with complex learning disabilities, and day opportunities and re-enablement for up to 15 adults per day who have physical disabilities.’’
