A FESTIVE sporting tradition that dates from the Twenties will take place for the last time this Christmas.
Sedgefield Racecourse, near Sedgefield, County Durham, will hold its last Boxing Day fixture this year.
Northern Racing Limited, which owns the course, has moved the fixture to Fontwell Park, in West Sussex.
Sedgefield manager Jill Williamson said the popular event – a Christmas tradition – would go out with a bang.
She said: “The reasoning behind the decision is mainly due to the new grandstand development at Fontwell Park, which should be complete in July.
“Boxing Day at Sedgefield Racecourse has taken place since the Twenties, and is as popular now as it was then.
“To fully appreciate the end of an era, we will be keeping the bars open long after the racing and playing music to keep the atmosphere cheerful and pleasant to ensure our loyal customers have a thoroughly enjoyable day.”
Entry starts from £7. For tickets, call 01740-621925.
