A RECKLESS metal thief caused chaos after he stole a gas meter from a historic landmark.
Police were forced to close of parts of Hartlepool after the thief caused a major gas leak outside Wesley Chapel, in Wesley Square, on Friday at 12.30pm Victoria Road, Wesley Square, part of Stockton Street, Clarence Road and Raby Road were cordoned off, causing major traffic congestion.
Acting Inspector Wayne Marram, of Hartlepool Police, said: "This was extremely dangerous, and we would be interested in speaking to anyone who has any information about the man responsible.
"Fortunately, the leak was quickly found and with excellent support from Middleton Grange Shopping Centre and police community safety officers, we were able to cordon off the area and make it safe."
A spokesman for United Utilities said: "Tampering with a gas meter in any way is a very foolish and potentially a very dangerous thing to do."
