I WAS wondering just how player ratings are calculated.
Having noted that Middlesbrough’s Tony McMahon was repeatedly kicking the ball straight to opposition players, I paid particular attention to what he did throughout the game.
He continued to give the ball away (four times in the first 20 minutes).
In the second half, he was playing in front of us. He looked very shaky indeed, trying to beat players when it would have been more sensible to pass, showing no confidence when the opportunity was there to make ground (giving side and backward passes).
He look extremely slow, in recovery. In other words, he simply didn’t look the part, like so many Boro full-backs in recent times (I noticed that Grounds, who was dreadful, was given a high score for his part in the Doncaster game.) McMahon should have got three or four.
