THE recent death at the age of 89 of 1950s Boro star Alex McRae (Northern Echo, October 19) has reminded me of the times I saw him play at Ayresome Park.
I was a schoolboy at the time and my father and I would attend every home match.
McRae was an inside forward and during a particularly hard-fought Middlesbrough v Sunderland match, he equalised for his side with only seconds to go.
It was a fine performance and the billboard said: “McRae saves Boro with last kick!”
