A CORNER of a county library became an unlikely orchard at the weekend as it staged a series of activities on a fruity flavour.
Apples of all varieties were the subject of the seasonal celebration at Clayport Library, in Durham.
Saturday’s fruit festival was staged to mark National Apple Day.
Dubbed Apple Fest@Clayport, the event was supported by Harbour House Farm, at nearby Plawsworth.
It gave visitors the chance to taste different varieties of apples grown in County Durham and sample a range of dishes produced using the popular fruit.
There were a series of applethemed art and craft activities, plus a competition to make the longest apple peel, for the chance to win the appropriate prize of a composting bin.
As part of the celebrations, local historian David Butler led a guided walk around Old Durham Gardens, while former county archivist Jennifer Gill gave a talk about the history of applegrowing in the county’s gardens, orchards and nurseries.
