AN alternative fashion show has placed the spotlight on quality ethical clothes.

The joint venture between Durham City Fair Trade Partnership and Climate Durham, saw the town hall packed to capacity as models strutted their stuff to a selection of world music.

The aim of the event was to raise awareness of “fashion with a conscience” clothes made from cotton certified with the Fairtrade Mark, organic clothing, sweatshopfree and fairly-traded garments.

Partnership chairwoman Kathryn Sygrove said: “We wanted the audience to reflect on the hidden price often placed upon garment workers and the climate, and inspire them to move towards purchasing fairer, more sustainable clothing.”

Fashions from Bishopston Trading Company, Traidcraft, Gossypium, Oxfam Reinvented, Namaste, People Tree and Nomads Clothing were showcased.

They were modelled by sixth-formers from Durham Johnston, Framwellgate Moor and St Leonard’s comprehensive schools and members of Durham University Ethical and Vintage Fashion Society.
