An end-of-terrace house in Yewbank Avenue, Gilesgate, Durham, was badly damaged by fire this evening.
Two fire crews from Durham were called shortly after 6pm to reports of a fire in the utility room.
However, a brigade spokesman said the woman occupant had closed all the doors behind her as she fled outside, preventing the fire spreading quickly.
"She has saved the whole house by doing the right thing," he added.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus searched the house for the woman's pet dog, which was thought to be inside.
However, it was later found safe and well in the back yard.
The ground floor of the house was left badly damaged.
