NATIONAL Hunt racing returned to Wetherby last week in a meeting which saw four race horses killed. In an interview in The Northern Echo a racing insider described these deaths as “one of those things”.

Imagine the uproar if a circus came to town and four animals were killed during a performance. The circus would be shut down and the owners would almost certainly face prosecution.

Yet, in horse racing the show simply goes on.

It seems to me that the horses pay a high price in the name of entertainment and, of course, keeping the betting shops open.
