YOU will have noticed that I'm very interested in the great Gothic Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse.
I borrowed a book from the British Library recently, written by Waterhouse's grand-daughter Prudence Waterhouse and Colin Cunningham, which contained a complete list of his contracts. One night, when I'd consumed enough wine to make me ridiculously ambitious, I decided to tap into my laptop all of Waterhouse's contracts in the North-East. Below are the results.
I hope you can make sense of my notes: from the look of the preview, they've run on into one long take. Sorry. A number preceeding a date is the number of Waterhouse's contract (he obviously did a lot of work elsewhere). The only abbreviation that might be confusing is h&v, which stands for "heating and ventiliation".
Please let me know if you have any connections to any of these Waterhousian properties.

Client: Dton Local Board of Health Contractors: general, R Stapp; chimney-piece, Joseph Bonehill; ironwork, FA Skidmore; JW Russell & Son Clerk of works: S Harrison Cost: £9,851. 1865-6: £2,615 Mkt cast iron cols supporting an iron roof, over a deep basement due to the sloping site. Basement vaults on cast iron brackets. On opening day, mkt was overcrowded and floor gave way, pitching two prize bulls and one bystander into the basement below. Human killed. Wths’ only bldng failure. Inquiry blamed faulty casting. Wths exonerated, and reputation in dton was not harmed. Wths never again built solely in iron and was always suspicious of it.
“Wths secured the dominance of the tower of dton market bldngs by a careful study of the awkwardly falling site and of the possible overbearance of the bldngs in high row above, his tower, based on principles set out in Ruskin’s Lamp of Power, allows the plainness of the greater part to disguise its height while its richly modeled upper storey and roof are clearly seen and form a focus for the heart of the town”
